Saturday, July 7

Woke up to both pups starring at me lovingly. Too cute and sweet! Georgie rolled over and put his head on my chest and was pawing playfully at me. They both seem so happy and are bonding! (BTW, is is 106 today).

I decided to take the pups and go back to James Naismith gravesite in hopes to shoot it again with morning light alone, leave Kim for her notes, Pebbles and quiet (with her coffee). THAT will put her in a good mood all day. ;) Pebbles is still having “potty issues” and she is very tense and worried.

The light is so much better in early morning and I got wonderful photos. Also, I went around to the other side of the cemetery and met Norma, who lives in the house which is in the background of the photo of Naismith’s grave. She showed me photos of her grand kids and was very friendly. I found another hoop across from the Memorial Cemetery.

Next stop, Wichita, Kansas for Lynette Woodard and Jackie Stiles!

It is SO hot, I mean BEYOND hot, that I have to use an umbrella to protect me from the sun when we stop to photograph this hoop in a parking lot.

106 degree, umbella for me!

We stopped off at Wichita High School North. The most lovely 1922 art deco High School with Indian theme and buffalo tiles decorating the exterior. Kim is in hog-heaven! She grabs her camera-phone and Pebbles to get some shots of the exterior and maybe Pebbles will poop? When we turned in, Jackie Stiles called. long talk, she gave me quote over phone. What a nice person!

On the way to Clafin, Kansas (feels like the middle of nowhere) we see this beautiful hoop against a white wood garage (shed) peeling paint, red and white net, and a hound dog. There is also hoop in trash pile near broken windmill. The family is home and lets us photograph it!

We see a couple more hoops on the way.

Now we are on our way to shoot the first woman Globetrotter’s Lynette Woodard hoop in the city park. We see a mailman walking in the street and ask him if Lynnette’s childhood home is close by. He points to a man that is standing in the front yard of a house a couple houses down and says, “That’s her brother right there!” When we speak to him, he couldn’t be nicer and invites me in to meet his sweet mother. Here is a hoop across the street from their house that is a park dedicated to Lynette.

We drove through thunderstorms in the country highways to Goodland, Kansaswhere we spend the night last night. We are on our way to photograph Jackie Stile’s hoop at a park. When we get there, it looks like another storm is coming so I have to move FAST!

A storm is brewing! We can see lightning on the horizon. When we FINALLY get to the hotel, we (Kim) unload the van of all equipment and dogs, carts piled high. I ask the manager where the elevator was … no elevator. How am I going to tell Kim? (Note to self, ask for a quiet room, no smoking, on upper floor) … but remember to ask if there is an elevator. Kim looked at me with look of desperation! After some tearful pleading, the concierge made it right and gave us a ground floor room. The thunderstorm with us all night.
